What to Pack for the Choquequirao Trek

Trekking to Choquequirao is one of the most rewarding experiences in Peru — but it’s also a physical challenge that requires good preparation. Packing smart can make the difference between an enjoyable adventure and an uncomfortable journey.

After organizing and guiding this trek many times, here’s the ideal packing list with everything you truly need to bring — no more, no less..

🎒 The Basics (Must-Haves)

  • Backpack (30–40L): A comfortable daypack to carry your daily essentials.
  • Duffel bag or larger backpack: For the mule to carry (if your tour includes pack animals).
  • Water bottle or hydration bladder (2L minimum): Staying hydrated is key.
  • Passport: You’ll need it for the entrance to Choquequirao.

👕 Clothing for the Trek (Layer Up!)

The weather changes a lot between day and night, so layers are essential:

  • Moisture-wicking t-shirts
  • Thermal base layer (for nights)
  • Fleece or warm jacket
  • Waterproof jacket or poncho (especially in rainy season)
  • Comfortable hiking pants
  • Rain pants (optional but useful)
  • Hat for sun protection
  • Wool hat or beanie (for cold nights)
  • Gloves (especially in dry season)
  • Hiking socks (2–3 pairs)
  • Undergarments

👟 Footwear

  • Good quality hiking boots (broken in — no new shoes!)
  • Sandals or camp shoes for the evening

🛏️ Sleeping Gear (If Not Provided by the Tour)

  • Sleeping bag (rated to at least -5°C)
  • Sleeping mat or inflatable pad (if not included)

Note: Many agencies — already include a tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping mat, but always confirm what’s included before packing.

🧼 Toiletries & Health

  • Toilet paper
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Toothbrush & toothpaste
  • Biodegradable soap
  • Sunscreen (high SPF)
  • Lip balm with SPF
  • Insect repellent
  • Basic first aid kit (plasters, painkillers, blister treatment)
  • Personal medications

🔦 Other Useful Items

  • Headlamp or flashlight (with extra batteries)
  • Snacks or energy bars
  • Trekking poles (highly recommended — it’s a steep trek!)
  • Camera or phone for photos
  • Power bank
  • Cash (for small purchases or tips — no ATMs!)

Bonus Tip

Keep your clothes in plastic or dry bags inside your backpack to protect them from rain. Even in the dry season, the weather can change quickly in the Andes.
