Is the Inca Jungle Trek Worth It?

After completing the Inca Jungle Trek to Machu Picchu, I can confidently say it was one of the best adventures I’ve done — but like any trip, it had its highs and a few challenges. If you’re wondering whether this trek is worth your time, here’s my honest breakdown based on my own experience.

✅ Pros (Why It Was Totally Worth It)

The Adventure Mix Is Unique
It’s not just walking! You get to bike down from snowy peaks, go rafting, try ziplining, and of course, hike through beautiful jungle trails. I loved that every day felt different.

Less Crowded Than the Classic Inca Trail
I met travelers, but the trails never felt packed. Compared to the famous Inca Trail, this route felt a bit more off-the-beaten-path, which I really enjoyed.

Amazing Scenery Changes
One minute you’re in the high Andes, and a few hours later, you’re surrounded by tropical plants and rivers. That mix — mountains, jungle, and Machu Picchu — makes this trek special.

Hot Springs After the Hike
The Cocalmayo hot springs were a game-changer after days of trekking. Sitting in warm natural pools while the sun sets? Worth every step.

Budget-Friendly
Compared to the Inca Trail, the Jungle Trek is more affordable. As a traveler watching my budget, this was a huge plus.

❌ Cons (Things to Consider)

It Can Be Physically Demanding
Even though it’s fun, make no mistake — there’s still a lot of walking, some long uphill sections, and early mornings. By day three, my legs were definitely feeling it.

Weather Is Unpredictable
I had sunny days and sudden rain showers. Even in the dry season, it’s best to be ready for anything. My poncho became my best friend!

Altitude Hits at the Start
The first day at Abra Málaga is at high altitude (4,300 m). I felt a little dizzy at first, but once we descended, it got much better.

My Final Verdict:

Yes — the Inca Jungle Trek is absolutely worth it if you want an adventurous, diverse, and more budget-friendly way to reach Machu Picchu.
Just come prepared for some physical effort, changing weather, and be ready to embrace the adventure. For me, every challenge was part of what made the journey so memorable!
